Traditional Architecture

EIn Provence, each region has its own style of construction and decoration, a careful look will notice the specific characteristics of the habitations of certain areas.

Within a few miles, the farm house gives way to the cowboys’ hut, the noble man’s country house to the small cottage. Placed in the garrigue, on the sea shore, majestically situated in the Camargue or in the shade of the olive trees of the Alpilles, each house is primarily a symbol of welcome and relaxation where each craftsman has inscribed and recreated the soul of Provence thanks to the magic of the materials and his mastery.

The façades are coloured in red or yellow ochres from the cliffs of Roussillon, the roofs are covered with the pinky orange tiles of Provence, the shutters shine lavender blue, within, sheltered from the brilliant light, hide the clear colours of the interior...
Craftsmen and Mastery

In this small corner of Provence, Tarascon maintains traditions and the mastery of craftsmen. Many craftsmen keep alive ancient techniques for love of their art; this we can see in their creations.

Saddlers, artists in leather, offer harnesses, saddles and local cowboy boots. Sculptors and stone-cutters transform the raw material straight from the quarries of Fontvieille or Les Baux de Provence.

Whether upholsterer, cabinet-maker, santon-maker, painter, violin –maker or artist in wrought-iron, each shows his skill in the traditional or contemporary objects he produces according to the history and traditions of the land.

During the Tarasque Fêtes or any other festive occasion, bowls competitions are organised by the Association Entente Bouliste Tarasconnaise, at the Municipal Bowls Grounds.

“Pétanque” is a Provençal word meaning « feet together », behind the line, before throwing the pétanque bowl. This bowls game is a great tradition in Provence, usually with a glass of pastis. Mainly played by men, it can be played by all. It is now becoming a sport in our area. Free, it is played outdoors. The game consists in throwing the bowls as close as possible to the small wooden bowl, the “bouchon or cochonnet”.Each game finishes when one party has scored 13 points.
