A hymn to the colours of Provence…
The Souleïado Museum, showing us the tradition of “Indian prints”.

The art of “painted cottons” seems to date back to the most ancient Mediterranean and Oriental civilisations. If we are to believe texts discovered in the area of Arles or Avignon, when the Crusaders returned from the Orient, they brought back magnificent dyed cloths, with luminous colours and bearing motifs of lemons, olives, and flowers … All highly evocative of the Mediterranean area. Considered a luxury product at the time of the Romans, the Crusaders or the East India Company, it was only in the 17th century when printed cottons imported from India, were very fashionable at the Court of Louis XIV that they became everyday objects. Later, they became the basis for the traditional costumes of women in Provence.

In the 17th century, Europe fell in love with Indian printed cottons. The tradition of “Indian prints” was particularly strong in Provence. Local craftsmen, using their own inspiration, created the Provençal prints.

The first documents giving evidence of a workshop in Tarascon, date back to 1806.

Charles DEMERY, the heir to this workshop, created the Souleïado Company in 1939 and founded the Museum in 1988. Set up in a fine nobleman’s town house, on the premises of the family business, the Museum retraces the history of the production of Indian prints. There are rare examples of textiles and provençal costumes, a unique collection of pottery and mingled clay pottery of the area, as well as, striking reconstitutions of scenes from everyday life in Provence in the 19th century. Last but not least, it houses a real treasure : 40 000 18th century printing blocks.
